EKO HOT BLOG reports that violence marred the Saturday presidential elections in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, resulting in the death of two people and injuries to two others.

According to Ebuh, gunshots were heard as early as 8am in the area, which caused INEC staff to flee for safety. She added that elections did not hold in ward 6, and two units in ward 7 and 5. Two people were shot dead during the violence, and two others were injured and hospitalized.

Despite the security challenges, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results of the election in the local government, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerging victorious. The APC secured 5,182 votes, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had 4,733 votes, and the Labour Party received 278 votes.

The violence in Akwa Ibom State is just one of several incidents of election-related violence that have been reported across Nigeria. The presidential and national assembly elections were postponed by one week due to logistical challenges, and some areas experienced delays and logistical issues during the polls.

The situation has led to concerns about the credibility and fairness of the elections, and calls for calm and restraint have been issued to all parties involved.

The Nigerian government and security agencies have been urged to take swift action to ensure that the perpetrators of violence are brought to justice, and to provide adequate security for voters and election officials during the upcoming governorship and state assembly elections.
