The defence headquarters (DHQ) says terrorism is now a thing of the past in Nigeria as it has now completely routed Boko Haram sect wreaking havoc in the north east.
Ekohotblog reports that the latest military assertion is in stark contrast to recent happenings in the beleaguered north eastern part of the country as the Boko Haram sect still carried out attacks in recent time.
In November last year, Boko Haram launched a horrific and devastating attacks on Zabarmari in Jere local government area of Borno state where over 40 farmers were beheaded.
But during an interview with NAN on Monday, John Enenche, coordinator of defence media operations, said the federal government and the military since 2015 had continously degraded the insurgents.
He said Boko Haram activities gained traction because of the earlier hiccups in dealing with the scourge which allowed the sect to overrun villages and set up administrative structures, hence threatening the territorial integrity of the nation.
He said the sect can no longer boast the of power and authority it once wielded in the north-east, adding that no single swathe of land is under the control of the insurgents.
“The issue of bombings that even spread to other places like Abuja, Kano, Niger and Kogi States, including their slipper cells no longer exist,” he said.
“What about suicide bombing, which is one of the signs of terrorism? It was rife and even at our checkpoints they come and detonate bombs as well as public gatherings; all these have been nipped properly.
“If you put all these together, I can tell you that terrorism has been checkmated.

He, however, said there are still pocket of attacks here and there, noting that this are isolation cases which are not uncommon with terrorism.
Enenche said history has shown that terrorism “is a very resilient type of enemy activity”, adding that the type of terrorism in Nigeria is not “a smart one” but rooted in the state of mind of a group of people.
