Reps Seeks To Establish Bola Tinubu University
The House of Representatives has passed the first reading of a bill to establish the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, a specialized institution aimed at promoting the study and development of Nigerian languages and cultures.
Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight other lawmakers, the bill seeks to create a university dedicated to providing academic and professional training in Nigerian languages.
The proposed university will offer diplomas, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs, focusing on developing skills in Nigerian languages and fostering cultural understanding.
According to the bill, the institution will provide opportunities for all individuals, regardless of race, creed, or political conviction, to acquire higher education in Nigerian languages.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that a key objective is to produce professionals capable of using Nigerian languages for national development, as well as conducting research to advance the effective use of Nigeria’s natural and human resources through language.
The institution will also collaborate with other national institutions involved in language research and development. Outreach programs, in-service training, and continuing education are part of its plans to enhance the study of Nigerian languages across various sectors.
The President will serve as the visitor to the university, with powers to conduct periodic assessments of the institution and, when necessary, remove council members, excluding the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor, for misconduct or inability to perform their duties.
The bill is set for a second reading in the coming weeks, after which a public hearing will be held to gather input from stakeholders. Once passed, the university will play a crucial role in preserving Nigeria’s linguistic heritage and promoting its relevance to national development.
