Border Closure And The Rise In Price Of Rice: Mr. President, Arise!

Rice, a staple in the daily diet of millions of Nigerians, holds a cherished place at the heart of the nation’s culinary traditions. From the aromatic jollof rice to the comforting white rice and stew, this grain unites diverse communities across the country. However, in recent years, the ever-increasing price of rice has cast a shadow over this dietary cornerstone.

This rise in cost poses significant challenges to the daily lives and budgets of Nigerians. Occasioned by the border closure, rice has transcended its role as a mere food item to become a symbol of national distress.

The soaring price of rice in Nigeria reflects the economic struggles faced by millions, making it a matter that demands the urgent attention of one man: Mr. President.

Border Closure And The Hike In Price Of Rice

In response to a complex set of challenges faced by the nation, President Muhammadu Buhari announced the closure of Nigeria’s borders in August 2019. This decision was aimed at addressing a range of issues, including smuggling, illegal immigration, and the protection of domestic industries. The implications of this border closure on the price of rice in Nigeria, the country’s staple food, were both significant and multifaceted.

According to a market survey, prior to the border closure in 2019, a 50kg bag of foreign parboiled rice was priced at N14,500. However, following the border closure, the price surged by over 100%, reaching a range of N30,500 to N32,000. The situation became even more complex as the removal of the fuel subsidy on May 29th further pushed the price of rice to around N49,500 to N50,300.

Rice On Display For Sale

The metaphorical ‘golden grain’ has indeed turned to gold, but not in a way that benefits the common man. The borders, once a source of economic exchange and diversity, have been shut, and the effects have rippled through the economy. The price of rice, in particular, has soared to unprecedented heights, leaving many struggling to put food on the table.

This situation has set off a chain reaction of economic repercussions. Households are forced to reallocate budgets, often forsaking essential needs in favor of this cherished grain. Likewise, small businesses that rely on rice as an essential ingredient are struggling to stay afloat.

Restaurants, food vendors, and street-side eateries are grappling with reduced patronage as the price of a plate of jollof rice or fried rice surges beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians. This spells not only financial hardship but also job losses and the erosion of the vibrant street food culture that makes our nation unique.

Alternative Approach To Border Security

While the security concerns that precipitated the border closure are valid, there are alternative and forward-thinking strategies at the government’s disposal. Strengthening our border security measures and investing in cutting-edge surveillance technology can effectively bolster our national safety without obstructing the flow of essential goods.

Furthermore, diplomatic engagement with our neighboring countries provides an opportunity to forge alliances that not only enhance security but also foster cooperation and economic prosperity. Through these alternative approaches, we can strike a balance that safeguards our nation’s security without unduly burdening the livelihoods of our fellow citizens.

Conclusion

With the recognition that the surge in rice prices is causing significant distress among Nigerians, it has become crucial to address the prevailing dilemma. While the border closure may have had noble intentions, it has inadvertently become a source of hardship for the average Nigerian.

The strains on our nation’s economic fabric have become all too apparent, and rice, a cherished symbol of unity and sustenance, has, regrettably, become an elusive luxury for many. The president is implored to reopen our orders and, in doing so, ease the suffering endured by the citizens.

In the spirit of unity and the well-being of the Nigerian people whom the president swore to protect, let rice once again be a source of comfort and nourishment for all.
