Borno Begins Fumigation In Maiduguri As Floodwaters Recede

The Borno State government has initiated a fumigation exercise as floodwaters begin to recede in Maiduguri, the state capital.

This was announced by Abdurrahman Bundi, Senior Special Adviser on New Media to Governor Babagana Zulum, during a press briefing at the Flood Disaster Situation Room in Maiduguri.

Bundi explained that the fumigation is being carried out as displaced residents start returning to their homes.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the primary goal of this effort is to prevent potential outbreaks of diseases that could arise due to the devastating floods, which have compromised sewage systems and exposed other hazardous materials.

“So far, fifteen major areas have been fumigated,” Bundi stated. “These include hospitals, correctional service quarters, fire service quarters, as well as parts of Gwange and Shehuri wards.”

Despite the receding floodwaters within the city, the outskirts of Maiduguri continue to face challenges, with farmlands and roads still submerged.

The flooding has particularly impacted the Maiduguri-Mafa-Dikwa-Gamboru Road, which remains cut off. This road is crucial as Borno serves as an international trade gateway, with federal roads linking Nigeria to neighboring countries like Cameroon and Chad.

The floods, which were caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam spillway on September 10, resulted in numerous deaths and significant property damage, the full extent of which is still being assessed.

Governor Zulum’s administration is taking these steps to ensure the safety and health of residents as the state recovers from this natural disaster.
