Alhaja Monsurat Bankole, the mother of former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, passed away on Friday at the age of 78. Her death comes just a few days after Nigeria also mourned the loss of another prominent figure, Princess Khadijah Adebisi Edionseri, widely known as ‘Cash Madam.’
Reports gathered indicate that Alhaja Bankole died in the early hours of Friday after a brief illness.
Although details surrounding her death remain limited, a close associate of Dimeji Bankole and a journalist with Ogun State Television, Hakeem Akintunde, shared the news on his Facebook page.
Sheikh Ikleel Lawal, popularly referred to as ‘Sugar,’ who is the Wakeelul Muslimeen of Yorubaland, Edo, and Delta States, also confirmed the sad news. According to him, Alhaja Bankole, who was the Iya Adini (Mother of Faith) of Egbaland, will be buried in line with Islamic traditions.
Sheikh Sugar stated that her burial would take place on Friday after the Solatul Asr prayer, which is around 4 pm. The burial will be held at her husband’s residence in the Oluwo area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Alhaja Monsurat Bankole was a respected figure in her community, both for her religious contributions and her role as a matriarch in the Bankole family. Her passing marks a significant loss not only for her immediate family but also for the Muslim community in Egbaland and beyond.
Tributes have continued to pour in from family, friends, and community members who have described her as a kind-hearted and devout woman who lived a life dedicated to her faith and family.
Her death also serves as a somber reminder of the recent loss of Princess Khadijah Adebisi Edionseri, fondly called ‘Cash Madam.’ Edionseri was a well-known socialite and philanthropist whose contributions left an indelible mark on many lives.
The Bankole family and the community are expected to come together in mourning as they pay their final respects to Alhaja Bankole. Her death has left a void in the lives of those who knew her and benefitted from her wisdom and kindness.
May her soul rest in peace, and may her family find comfort during this difficult time.
