During a press briefing at the NYSC Headquarters in Abuja on Friday, Brig Gen Ahmed stated, “On August 22, we rescued the last corps member in a set of eight, Solomon Daniel Bassey.”
EKO HOT BLOG gathered that on August 23, 2023, eight corps members were kidnapped by suspected terrorists while en route to their orientation camp in Zamfara State on Monday, August 21, 2023.
The prospective corps members were traveling on an Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC) bus from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to Sokoto State for the mandatory one-year national service when their vehicle was intercepted by the kidnappers.
Among the 11 individuals on the bus, including the driver, three corps members managed to escape during the attack, while the remaining eight, along with the driver, were abducted.
The kidnapped group included Emmanuel Esudue, a Agricultural and Environmental Engineering graduate from Akwa Ibom State University, and Victoria Udoka, a Mass Communication graduate from the University of Uyo.
On August 24, SaharaReporters reported that the Nigeria Police Force and the army had launched a search operation for the abducted corps members.
NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, had previously stated that one of the seven remaining corps members was still in captivity. In a statement titled “Update on kidnapped prospective corps members: one released from captivity,” the NYSC expressed hope that the remaining abductees would soon be rescued and reunited with their families.
The statement read: “The Management of the National Youth Service Corps wishes to inform the general public that with the assistance of security agencies, we have secured the release of one of the female prospective corps members abducted in Zamfara State on Friday, October 20, 2023, at approximately 12:30 pm, along with the bus driver.
“The Scheme is confident that with the combined efforts of security agencies, the remaining captives will be released. While Corps Members and prospective ones are urged to prioritize their personal security, the Scheme remains committed to upholding the security and welfare of Corps Members at all times.”
