BREAKING NEWS

A court has annulled Akwa Ibom state APC governorship primary.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that a Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, has annulled the All Progressives Congress governorship primary conducted on May 26, 2022, and ordered a fresh governorship primary within 14 days.

The court also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission not to recognise him (Akan Udofia) nor accept him as a candidate according to section 77 sub-section 3 of the Electoral Act.

Delivering judgment on Monday, November 14, 2022, the presiding judge, Justice Agatha Okeke, also disqualified the governorship candidate of the party, Akanimo Udofia, from participating in the primary, saying that he was not a member of the APC in the state.

Mr Udofia, a successful entrepreneur, was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and had bought the PDP nomination forms to contest the party governorship primary in Akwa Ibom before he defected to the APC.

He got the APC governorship ticket in the state with the influence of the former minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, to the consternation of many of the party members and supporters.

Justice Okeke ruled that Mr Udofia did not satisfy the provision of the electoral laws which stipulates that he ought to have been a member of the APC for at least 30 days before the nomination and that moreover the waiver Mr Udofia allegedly got from the APC was not signed by “any known persons”.
