Soyinka, who serves as the Regional Editor of The Conversation Africa, was detained on Sunday upon his arrival from the United Kingdom.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Soyinka was picked up by DSS agents shortly after his flight landed, with no explanation provided for his arrest.
In a distress message sent to The PUNCH, a friend of Soyinka’s reported that he has been held incommunicado since the arrest.
The message read, “Adejuwon Soyinka was detained by DSS officers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos around 5:40 am on Sunday, August 25, 2024, shortly after arriving in Nigeria on a Virgin Atlantic flight from the UK.
As of now, no reason has been given for his detention, and he has not been reachable, with calls and messages to his phone going unanswered.”
When contacted, DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya stated he was unaware of Soyinka’s arrest and declined to comment further, saying, “I am not aware of the matter you have raised and have no comments on it.”
