Nigerian human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has finally been released from prison in Ekiti State, where he had been held for weeks on defamation charges after meeting bail conditions.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the announcement of his release was made by Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), on his X social media handle.
‘I am pleased to report that @DeleFarotimi Farotimi is no longer being held at the prison yards in Ekiti state and is now returning home to Lagos. The struggle continues!
Happy holidays to you all’
“The struggle continues! Happy holidays to you all!”
He wrote.
Eko Hot Blog gathered that Farotimi is currently on his way to Lagos and will reunite with his family today.
The next adjournment is slated for January 29, 2025, at the Federal High Court and February 15, 2025, at the Magistrate Court.”
Recall that Farotimi’s legal troubles stem from a petition filed by prominent Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), which led to his arrest.
The lawyer was remanded in prison custody on December 7, 2024, following a 16-count charge of criminal defamation linked to the publication of his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with many calling for due process and fairness in the judicial proceedings against Farotimi.
