BREAKING: FG Hands Over £4.2m Ibori Loot To Delta State

  • states can sue the Federal Government to recover such funds.

The Federal Government on Tuesday said it had returned the £4.2m recently repatriated from the United Kingdom to Delta state government.

The money was looted from the state treasury by former Governor James Ibori.

The Accountant General of the Federation, Mr Ahmed Idris made this known in Abuja on Tuesday when he appeared before the House of Representatives Adhoc Committee on Assessment and Status of All Recovered Loots.

The Accountant-General told the Committee such funds looted from the treasury of a state are always returned to the state.

He also added that states can sue the Federal Government to recover such funds.

The money has been subject of controversy with attorney general of the federation, Abubakar Malami, saying federal government can’t return the money to Delta state because it did not partake in the repatriation process.

Delta state government, however, countered Malami claims, saying that the money was stolen from the coffers of the state, hence it’s only sensible that it’s returned to it.

It added that it’s not within the purview of the state government to bypass federal government and negotiate with other countries on repatriation of funds stolen from it.
