EKOHOTBLOG reports that the governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has disclosed that the threat to the declaration of a state of emergency in the state was not President Muhammadu Buhari’s idea.
Governor Obiano made the disclosure while speaking to State House Correspondents after a meeting with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.
EKOHOTBLOG recalls that the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, had on Wednesday said that the Federal Government (FG) would impose a state of emergency in Anambra State to tighten security ahead of the November 6 governorship election in the state.
Malami stated this after the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Buhari.
The AGF added that the FG will do everything possible to ensure protection of lives and property, adding that where there is evidence of failure of the state government to ensure democratic order and security of lives, the Federal Government will prevail and will not rule out the possibility of imposing a state of emergency.
However, Governor Obiano, while speaking to newsmen on Thursday, said he reported Malami to President Buhari on the matter.
The governor further described the threat as unfortunate just as he wondered why Malami had not contemplated the imposition of emergency rule in northern states during massive killings occasioned by banditry.
“That’s a very unfortunate comment by the Attorney-General. Malami. Very unfortunate. I also reported that to the President and this is not in the books of the President because he knows that Anambra has been the safest state in Nigeria for seven years plus,” he said.
Governor Obiano added that he would call the Attorney General to express his mind to him over the suggestion, insisting apart from the recent security crisis, Amambra had been the most peaceful state in the South-East region.
