BREAKING: Reps In Chaos As Another LP Lawmaker Defects To APC

The House of Representatives has advanced a bill that would require the President and State Governors to specify portfolios for ministerial and commissioner nominees before submitting their names for confirmation.

The bill, which has now passed its second reading, is designed to improve the scrutiny process, enabling lawmakers to assess nominees more effectively based on their intended roles.

Rep. Okechukwu Dibiagwu, who led the debate, argued that pre-assigning portfolios would allow the National Assembly and state assemblies to evaluate candidates’ suitability more precisely, aligning their skills and experience with the specific responsibilities they would hold.

“This bill ensures nominees are evaluated according to the roles they’ll perform,” he stated, underscoring the need for transparency in the confirmation process.

Additionally, the House advanced a separate bill proposing to extend the retirement age for healthcare workers across Nigeria. This bill also reached its second reading, aiming to retain skilled healthcare professionals for longer and address workforce shortages in the sector.

The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) shared an update on the House’s recent legislative developments on its official X account, summarizing the progress of both bills.
