“After thoughtful consideration, l’m announcing my immediate retirement from professional football. I’ve had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity. But in recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries, it’s become more and more clear that it’s time to leave the big stage of football.”
Ozil spent eight years at Arsenal between 2013 and 2021, helping the Gunners win four trophies, including the FA Cup four times. He was also a key figure in Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad.
However, his relationship with Arsenal became increasingly strained in his final years at the club. He was left out of the 25-man Premier League squad by then-manager Mikel Arteta in 2020, and his contract was terminated with six months remaining in January 2021.
In his statement, Ozil thanked his family, friends, former teammates and coaches, and the fans who have supported him throughout his career. He also hinted at staying active on social media, saying:
“Now I’m looking forward to everything that is in front of me with my beautiful wife, Amine, and my two beautiful daughters, Eda and Ela – but you can be sure that vou will hear from me from time to time on my social media channels.”
