  • Former Arsenal player, Mesut Ozil announces his retirement from football.

  • Taking to his Instagram, the 34-year-old revealed his decision shortly after signing for his new club, Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey.

  • In his post, he thanks former clubs, Schalke, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Fenerbache.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Mesut Ozil, the former Arsenal and Germany playmaker, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34. The decision comes just eight months after joining Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey, and brings to an end a career that spanned nearly 17 years.

In a statement posted on social media, Ozil said:

EDITOR’S PICKS:

“After thoughtful consideration, l’m announcing my immediate retirement from professional football. I’ve had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity. But in recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries, it’s become more and more clear that it’s time to leave the big stage of football.”

Ozil spent eight years at Arsenal between 2013 and 2021, helping the Gunners win four trophies, including the FA Cup four times. He was also a key figure in Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad.

However, his relationship with Arsenal became increasingly strained in his final years at the club. He was left out of the 25-man Premier League squad by then-manager Mikel Arteta in 2020, and his contract was terminated with six months remaining in January 2021.

In his statement, Ozil thanked his family, friends, former teammates and coaches, and the fans who have supported him throughout his career. He also hinted at staying active on social media, saying:

“Now I’m looking forward to everything that is in front of me with my beautiful wife, Amine, and my two beautiful daughters, Eda and Ela – but you can be sure that vou will hear from me from time to time on my social media channels.”
