In response to the allegations, the breeders’ group claimed that the narrative was false and contrary to what the SEMA had reported. Miyetti Allah also stated that it was waiting for Governor Ortom to finish his tenure so that he could be dragged before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Hague for “genocide.”
The General Secretary of Miyetti Allah, Saleh Alhassan, dismissed the allegations as “baseless and politically motivated.” He further claimed that the Benue State government was responsible for the killings of their members, adding that they had a record of their members being killed by “killer cops” in Benue.
In his own reaction, the National President of MACBAN, Baba Ngelzarma, promised to release figures of its members killed by the Benue State government. He claimed that they had recorded how many people the crisis consumed, and that they would furnish the public with the figures soon.
SEMA’s Executive Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Shior, had alleged that suspected armed herders were responsible for attacks in 18 out of the 23 local government areas in the state.
He stated that since 2015, 5,138 Benue citizens had been killed, with 2,131 deaths recorded in 2021 alone. Dr Shior also noted that there had been renewed attacks in some local government areas of the state shortly after the presidential and National Assembly elections.
The Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore Fulani socio-cultural organization and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) have denied responsibility for the killings in Benue State.
“The herdsmen he (Shior) is talking about are a figment of his imagination. Are herders killers? Those herdsmen are the ones that will escort him to his political doldrums.”
The National President of MACBAN, Baba Ngelzarma, remarked that figures of its members killed by the Benue State government would also be released soon.
“We have the number of herdsmen killed by the (Benue) government in the years under review. We know how many people the crisis consumed, and will furnish the public with the figures soon.”
