The newly-elected president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Sunday Asefon has warned that private universities may be shut down if the lingering strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) remains unresolved for much longer.

While discussing with a PUNCH Online interview programme, The Roundtable, he noted that the union will first try to mediate between the federal government and ASUU with a view to resolving the disagreements but if this move fails, then private universities will be shut down by the students association.

The NANS president expressed sadness that the ongoing strike is the longest industrial action embarked on by the university lecturers.

Meanwhile, threat by the NANS President is coming a few minutes after Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, December 9, postponed the negotiation meeting earlier scheduled today with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The postponement was contained in a message from the Deputy Director, Ministry of Laboru and Employment, Mr. Charles Akpan.

According to the message, “The Meeting between ASUU and the Federal Government earlier scheduled for today (Wednesday) by 3pm has been postponed. Thank you for your understanding.”

Ekohotblog understands that ASUU strike has been on since March this year. ASUU started the strike over the nonpayment of Earned Academic Allowances, non provision of revitalisation fund among others.
