EKOHOTBLOG reports that the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) has confirmed a jailbreak in Kogi State.
EKOHOTBLOG had earlier reported that hundreds of prisoners escaped from the medium federal correctional centre in Kabba, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of the state.
However, the NCS spokesman, Francis Enobore, who confirmed the attack via a statement on Monday, said heavily armed gunmen stormed the correctional centre overnight and freed scores of inmates.
“The medium Security Custodial Centre in Kabba, Kogi State, has been attacked by yet to be identified gunmen and 240 inmates forcefully released,” the NCS spokesman said.
He added that at about 2245 GMT on Sunday, numerous attackers “engaged the armed guards in a fierce gun battle”, noting that the gunmen invaded the prison, which had 294 prisoners in custody at the time, including 224 pre-trial detainees.
