Barrister Olumide Akpata emerges winner of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election held on Thursday morning July 30, 2020.
It is the first time in over three decades that the president of the NBA will be emerging from outside the ranks of senior advocates.
Akpata won the 2020 elections with 8075 votes, which are about 54.8 per cent of the vote cast ahead of the first runner-up, Babatunde Ajibade, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who polled 3616 votes (24.1 per cent), while the second runner-up, Dele Adesina scored 3343 (22.2 per cent).
Other lawyers had used his example as a campaign weapon to wrestle the leadership of the Association from the privileged class of senior advocates.
Elections into other offices are also ongoing as a total of 29,636 lawyers are voting nationwide in the electronic poll, according to the Electoral Committee of the NBA, which will end at 11 pm on Thursday.
