Onwenu, who collapsed at the 80th birthday party of Stella Okoli, founder of Emzor Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Company, on July 30, was confirmed dead at Reddington Hospital in Lagos.
A service of songs was held on Friday, August 30, at the Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju, attended by numerous dignitaries, including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi. Tributes to the late singer were heartfelt and numerous.
Following the service, Onwenu was buried at Ebony Vaults on James George Street, off Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos. Family, friends, and clergymen gathered at the gravesite to pay their last respects as her remains were laid to rest.
Onwenu’s sons, Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, expressed their gratitude for the medical efforts to save their mother. They described her as a “national treasure, an icon, and a legend” whose legacy will have a lasting impact.
