EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Boko Haram militants from the Islamic State-backed Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jam’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihd, are currently attacking Gajiram, a village in Borno State.
According to Saharareporters, the insurgents stormed the community in the early hours of Saturday, firing heavy artillery.
Gajiram is the headquarters of Nganzai Local Government Area of the state.
“The insurgents were said to have come in several trucks fitted with machine guns on Saturday morning,” Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in Lake Chad said in confirmation of the attack.
The situation has forced people to scamper for safety and remain indoors as the shooting continued, according to reports.
Since the death of JAS leader, Abubakar Shekau, ISWAP has been consolidating its grip in locations around Lake Chad.
The sect’s membership has swollen with the defection of hundreds of Boko Haram fighters under Shekau.
The Nigerian Army has repeatedly claimed that the insurgency had been largely defeated and frequently underplays any losses.
The terror group has caused over 150,000 deaths and displaced millions of people mainly in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.
