EKO HOT BLOG reports that Morocco made history on Saturday as the first African country to reach the World Cup semi-final stage at the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Morocco beat one of the tournament’s favourites, Portugal, 1-0 to emerge victorious.
Youssef En-Nesyri’s first-half header secured a historic win for Morocco, who will play defending champions France or England for a place in the final.
With Portugal’s defeat to Morocco in the quarterfinal at Qatar 2022, their dreams of winning a maiden World Cup have been extinguished for another four years. And the door may have now been permanently closed on Cristiano Ronaldo.
The one trophy that has eluded him throughout his storied career has been the World Cup, and the 37-year-old was hoping that, with a strong team around him, he would be able to have the ultimate swansong in what is highly likely to be his final major international tournament.
But despite topping a group featuring South American heavyweights Uruguay and a fantastic 6-1 win over Switzerland in the Round of 16, they were shocked by the Atlas Lions in the quarterfinal.
With the failure to win the World Cup in Qatar now confirmed, it’s difficult to see Cristiano Ronaldo closing out what is left of his fantastic career with a major trophy for both club and country.
