The attacks ended hopes for a diplomatic solution that the United States and its allies had been attempting for weeks.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted that “Putin has just launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.” Before Putin’s announcement, Zelensky said he tried to call the Russian leader but was rebuffed.
President Joe Biden said that he would meet with world leaders to impose “severe sanctions” in the wake of the Russian attack.

Reuters quoted him ‘saying that Russia has carried out missile strikes on Ukraine’s infrastructure on border guards’.
Zelensky has called on his national security and defence council to declare martial law.
The council is expected to hold an urgent meeting to decide the issue.
Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has condemned Russia’s “reckless attack” on Ukraine.
In a post on Twitter, he says it “puts at risk countless civilian lives”. “This is a grave breach of international law & a serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security,” he adds.
He says Nato allies will meet to address Russia’s “renewed aggression”.
