EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Bola Tinubu to direct former governors currently serving as ministers in his administration to stop collecting lifetime pensions, luxurious cars, and other perks from their respective states while holding ministerial positions.
SERAP also urged the president to ensure that these former governors promptly return any pensions and allowances they have received since leaving their gubernatorial offices back to the public treasury.
The organization said that the appointment of former governors who collect life pensions while serving as ministers is implicitly forbidden by the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] and the country’s international legal obligations.
SERAP said that Tinubu would be acting in the public interest by stopping former governors now serving as ministers in his government from collecting life pensions, especially given the current grave economic realities in the country.
The organization said that the former governors should not be allowed to enjoy double emoluments while serving as ministers, and that they should return any pensions and allowances they have received to the public treasury.
