The Supreme Court has upheld an earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal which maintained the deregistration of National Unity Party (NUP) and 73 other political parties in the country, EKO HOT BLOG has gathered.

In the judgment delivered by Justice Adamu Jauro on Friday, the apex court said the deregistration of the 74 political parties was done in line with the laws and compliance with the extant provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Act.

It would be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had in 2020 deregistered 74 political parties over their inability to win any election during the 2019 general elections.

The INEC Chairman, Yakubu Mahmood, recently said the deregistration of the political parties was in preparation for the coming 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

According to the INEC boss, the action was not unconnected with the poor performance of the parties in the 2019 general elections.

Mahmood noted that the 74 political parties failed to satisfy the requirements of the Fourth Alteration to the Constitutional Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).
