EKO HOT BLOG reports that in attendance are the Presidents of Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, and Senegal, alongside Sierra Leone’s Vice President, the Finance Minister of Benin Republic, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Togo, and the Ambassador of Cape Verde to Nigeria.
The summit is expected to address significant concerns regarding the recent decision by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to withdraw from the regional body.
Additionally, the ongoing session will focus on advancing regional economic integration, combating the surge of terrorism in the Sahel, and addressing political instability in several member states.
The 66th Ordinary Summit will also review the sanctions imposed on Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger following recent military coups, aiming to balance diplomatic solutions with the bloc’s core commitment to promoting democracy.
The leaders are also set to discuss the situation in military-ruled countries, with an emphasis on promoting shorter transitions to civilian governance.
It is worth noting that during the previous summit, President Tinubu appointed Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye as a mediator between ECOWAS and the three countries—Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso.
