The Ondo State Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Akure, the state capital, has declared Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), winner of the October 20 governorship election in the state.

The Election Tribunal on Tuesday struck out the petition filed by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Eyitayo Jegede, for want of Jurisdiction.

Justice Umar Abubakar, who led the three-man panel, ruled that the “issue raised therein in this petition are settled issue of internal affairs and management of a political party which this Tribunal has no Jurisdiction.”

EKO HOT BLOG had earlier reported that the Tribunal shifted the judgement from Friday, April 23, 2021, to Tuesday, April 20 (today).

The judgement was delivered via zoom due to the ongoing strike action by members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).

All courts across the country have been under lock since the commencement of the strike action.

After the declaration of Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election, Jegede approached the Tribunal, seeking nullification of the election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Jegede alleged that the poll was marred by irregularities.

The PDP candidate also asked the court to nullify the nomination of Akeredolu and his deputy, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on the ground that they were not duly nominated by their party.

The defence counsels of the APC and that of the governor had pleaded with the court to dismiss the PDP’s petition on several grounds.
