BREAKING: UK Reacts To #EndSARS Protest, Sends Strong Warning To Buhari Govt
The British Government on Sunday made it position known on the pervasive call for the dissolution of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the Nigeria Police.
The country has been enveloped in widespread protest against SARS and police brutality. SARS is notorious for kidnapping, extortion, torture and in some cases extrajudicial killings.
The police have used brute and excessive force on the protesters. Live bullet, teargas canister and water cannon have all been used on the unarmed protesters.
At least four people have been shot dead by the police and many injured.
Reacting to the situation, the United Kingdom called on Nigerian authorities to respect the rights of End SARS protesters.
On the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), the UK observed the promise by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on rights violations.
In statement by Catriona Laing, British High Commissioner to Nigeria, UK lauded the government decision to disband SARS, saying it was an important first step.
“We welcome the government’s announcement on the future of #SARS – an important first step. The IGP’s commitment to ensure accountability for human rights violations is essential to restoring public confidence in @PoliceNG
“Hearing reports of violence affecting ongoing protests. Urge authorities to respect the right to protest and protestors to remain peaceful. @UKinNigeria.”
