BREAKING : University of Abuja Now to be Known as Yakubu Gowon University
In honor of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, the Federal Executive Council has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja.
Ekohotblog reports that the institution will now be called Yakubu Gowon University, as announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, after the council’s meeting at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
He said “Of course, the process will have to go to the National Assembly for all legislative work in that direction, but FEC has taken that decision to write to the National Assembly to change the name of the University of Abuja.”
Idris also revealed that the council will proceed on a recess from December 18, 2024 to January 6, 2025.
The decision to rename the university is seen as a tribute to General Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s history and his dedication to the nation. Gowon, who served as Head of State from 1966 to 1975, played a crucial role in the country’s post-civil war reconciliation and reconstruction efforts.
