BREAKING: VP Shettima to Represent Tinubu at CHOGM 2024 in Samoa
President Bola Tinubu has appointed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
According to a statement by Stanley Nwokocha, the Vice President’s spokesperson, Shettima will represent Nigeria at the international event scheduled to take place in Apia, Samoa, from October 21 to 26.
The 2024 CHOGM will host King Charles III of England and leaders from 56 member countries, who will convene to address key global issues affecting the Commonwealth.
This year’s theme is “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth.”

The statement highlights that the theme will emphasize building resilience and unlocking the potential of member nations through collaboration, leveraging the “Commonwealth Advantage,” and promoting digital connectivity.
Nigeria, along with other members, will also participate in the election of the next Commonwealth Secretary-General, who is set to come from the African region in line with regional rotation agreements. Candidates from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia are in the running for the position, with Nigeria expected to play a significant role as the largest African member state.

The statement further notes that VP Shettima and other global leaders will discuss the global economy, environmental challenges, and security issues, focusing on how Commonwealth countries can enhance cooperation to boost trade, innovation, growth, and empower the 1.5 billion young people within the Commonwealth.
Shettima is expected to leverage the Commonwealth Business Forum to attract investors to Nigeria, while also participating in the People’s Forum, a major platform organized by the Commonwealth Foundation for civic engagement on global development issues. The Vice President will also engage in bilateral meetings and other high-level discussions.
