The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has suggested a potential increase in the N15 trillion budget for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to accommodate additional features aimed at enhancing the project’s socio-economic value.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the minister disclosed this during an inspection of Sections I and II of the highway at its Lagos end. A statement from his Special Adviser on Media, Hon. Orji Uchenna Orji, detailed the minister’s remarks, including plans to integrate tree planting, CCTV cameras, and other features along the 750-kilometer road.

“We’re planning to establish lay bays every five kilometers, equipped with solar-powered CCTV cameras for monitoring. Security posts with cabins will also be set up for rapid response,” Umahi stated. He highlighted that the initial design excluded these features, as well as a service lane, necessitating the revision of project plans and costs.
Umahi expressed satisfaction with the progress and quality of work by Hitech Construction Company Ltd., describing the highway as a hallmark of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He commended the president for prioritizing infrastructure projects that connect key economic zones and improve Nigeria’s transportation network.
He further noted that ongoing legacy projects, including the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway and the Kebbi section, are progressing well. Approximately 20 kilometers of road in these sections are expected to be completed and commissioned by May 29, 2025.
Additionally, the construction of a train track for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is slated to commence in 2025.
Federal Controller of Works, Engr. Olukorede Kashia, highlighted challenges such as refuse dumps and deep soil layers that required extensive sand filling, contributing to delays. Other key contributors at the event included Engr. Saidu Musa, Acting Director of Highways Road Design, and Dany Abboud, Managing Director of Hitech Construction Company Ltd.
