Buhari Meets Ghanian President, Akufo Addo Amid Growing Diplomatic Tension

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday met with his Ghanaian counterpart President Nana Akufo-Addo at the presidential villa.

A presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, made this in a tweet but he did not give details of its outcome.

“President @MBuhari receives Ghanian President H.E. @NAkufoAddo tonight in his official residence at the State House, Abuja,” Ahmad tweeted.

Meeting between the Presidents of the west Africa nations is coming in the wake of unjust treatment meted out to Nigerians doing business in Ghana.

It also coming a few days after Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo met with Nigerian traders in Ghana who bemoaned the harsh and business business environment in that country.

Nigerian traders in Ghana had cried out over the closure of their shops by authorities in the country.

In June, a building at the Nigerian commission in Ghana was demolished.

Reacting to these developments, the federal government had said it would no longer condone the harassment of Nigerians in Ghana.

“Indications, especially in recent times are that Nigeria’s stance is now being taken for granted and its citizens being made targets of harassment and objects of ridicule,” Lai Mohammed, minister of information, said in a statement in August.

“This will no longer be tolerated under any guise.”

In its defence, Ghana said Nigeria had promulgated policies that affected its citizens as well.

“These include the closure of Nigeria’s Seme Krake border from August 2019 to date and the issuance of executive orders by Nigeria’s Presidency, preventing foreigners from getting jobs which Nigerians can do, to mention a few,” Kojo Nkrumah, Ghanaian minister of information, said.
