Buhari Orders Security Operatives To Shoot Anyone Seen With AK-47
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed security agencies to gun down anyone seen with AK-47, the presidency has disclosed.
Garba Shehu, a presidential Spokesperson, made the disclosure during an interview with the BBC.
He said the directive follows the refusal of some bandits to surrender, adding that the president directed a clampdown on such bandits.
On the efforts being made to rid Zamfara and other northern states of bandits, Shehu said the government is resorting to lethal force.
“The president has ordered security forces to go into the bushes and shoot whoever they see with sophisticated weapons like AK-47,” he said.
Zamfara has been the hotbed of banditry and other criminal activities in recent months. 279 students were kidnapped last Friday when bandits attacked Jangebe government secondary school in the state. The schoolgirls were released on Tuesday.
The state governor, Bello Matawalle, had said he would continue to adopt the non-kinetic approach, which includes dialogue and amnesty, in addressing the security challenges in the state.
He also said repentant bandits were instrumental to the release of the schoolgirls as they helped during negotiation.
