Nigeria music superstar and afrobeat maestro, Burna Boy has won his first-ever Grammy.
Burna Boy won the best global music for his last album, twice as tall.
The victory was announced on Sunday evening (Nigerian time) at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards premiere.
The Nigerian star beat other nominees in the category, including Malian band Tinariwen and U.S. band Antibalas.
It is the second Grammy nomination for the Nigerian singer as his first nomination was in 2019 for his “African Giant” album, in the same category. Though he lost at the awards last year, music critics predict that he has better chances at a win this year.
In 2013, Burna Boy released his first studio album, “LIFE” — an acronym for “Leaving an Impact For Eternity.”
Burna Boy followed the release of LIFE with two albums; “Redemption” in 2015 and “Outside” in 2018 that included Kanye West endorsed song, “Ye”, which has over 129 million views on YouTube.
After “Ye” garnered the attention of the international music community, his 2019 “African Giant” album got high acclaim.
It got him his first Grammy Nomination, a win at the MTV EMA,
Burna Boy became the second Nigeria artistes to win the coveted and prestigious award after Wizkid won the award for his role in ‘Brown Skin Girl’, a collaboration with Beyonce.
