Bus-Train Collision: Lagos Discharges 53 Victims As Sanwo-Olu Hails Blood Donors

• An oncoming train crashed into a Lagos government staff bus on Thursday.

• The accident led to the death of at least six passengers, while more than 100 people were injured.

• The government has been treating the injured persons in a few health facilities and has discharged more than half of the victims.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that 53 victims of the recent bus-train crash in the state have been discharged from government health facilities.

He provided the update on Sunday evening.

Recall that a Lagos State government staff bus conveying civil servants on Thursday morning collided with an oncoming train at the PWD – Shogunle axis of Ikeja.

The accident led to at least six deaths; two died at the scene of the accident, while four passed away during resuscitation at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

At a press conference on Friday, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, disclosed that three government hospitals admitted a total of 102 victims.

Abayomi explained that the government had ensured all victims were well taken care of and provided with necessary medical treatments.

Addressing Lagos residents via a social media post, Sanwo-Olu noted that the 53 patients were discharged after receiving free and quality healthcare.

The governor also hailed blood donors for displaying “true humanity” and helping to save lives.

“I am pleased to report that 53 patients that were hospitalised after the bus/train accident in Lagos have now been discharged after receiving free and quality healthcare from different state medical facilities across Lagos,” he wrote on social media.

“Heeding our call for blood donation, Lagosians demonstrated true humanity with over 256 units of blood donated leading to swift action that saved lives.

“While the discharged return to their families, let us continue to keep the hospitalised patients in our prayers.”

43 victims are still admitted at different health facilities; 39 at LASUTH, two at General Hospital, Odan, and another two at General Hospital, Gbagada.

Meanwhile, the bus driver, Rotimi Osibanjo, who has been blamed for not heeding calls to stop the vehicle in time, has said mechanical failure, not him, was to be blamed.

He also sought the forgiveness of victims and their families.

Osibanjo is currently in police custody and being investigated as the Lagos attorney-general, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, has promised to prosecute anyone found culpable in the deadly accident.
