The Federal Government is set to launch 60 buses as part of its free transportation initiative under the Ministry of Transportation, aimed at easing road travel during the yuletide season.

The Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, Michael Oluwagbemi, disclosed this during an interview, stating that the buses will operate across Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan, Abeokuta, and nearby states.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the initiative complements the government’s earlier announcement of free train rides for 340,000 Nigerians during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, facilitated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Oluwagbemi explained that the buses would provide free transportation through early January 2025, benefiting Nigerians traveling interstate.

“We currently have 15 buses running in Abuja for routes like Gwagwalada, Keffi, Nyanya, and Zuba. This week, we will expand to interstate routes with an additional 60 buses,” Oluwagbemi stated.

The government’s broader goal includes reducing transportation costs by converting commercial vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Oluwagbemi revealed that agreements have been signed with transporters to support this transition. “We are converting cab drivers’ vehicles to CNG, and by the end of January 2025, they should offer discounted fares upon meeting benchmark targets,” he added.
