CAF Dismiss Reports Of Africa Cup of Nation’s Cancellation
EKO HOT BLOG reports that Confederation of African Football (CAF), has debunked viral reports in the media that the upcoming 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations is on the brink of being cancelled.
CAF, Head of Media Relations and Operations, Lux September, clearing the air on the cancellation of the AFCON, described the reports as ‘fake news’
September added : “Of course these are lies. There has not been a single meeting where this was discussed.
“But we all know the source of misinformation from some ‘lobby’ groups . They always undermine Africa. We know them”.
However, the secretary general of CAF, Véron Mosengo-Omba reassured on Tuesday during his visit to Yaounde that the Olembe Stadium will be ready for the opening game of the tournament between Cameroon and Burkina Faso on January 9.
The three-time African champions Nigeria will do battle with Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau in Group D of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles under the tutelage of interim boss Augustine Eguavoen are set to begin a training camp after Christmas.
Meanwhile, reports from French media, had earlier claimed that Covid-19’s new variant omicron could lead to a cancellation of the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.
It is also believed that the clubs in the English Premier League would very much love to keep their players as those called up have to undergo quarantine upon their return to the United Kingdom, which would deprive clubs of their players for a longer period.
