CAF Mourns Death Of Mauritanian Goalkeeper Mohamed El Mokhtar
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed deep condolences following the untimely death of 21-year-old Mauritanian national team goalkeeper Mohamed El Mokhtar.
According to a statement from CAF, the young goalkeeper tragically “lost his life due to an unforeseen collision while at training, which resulted in head trauma.”

CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to El Mokhtar’s family, club, and the Mauritanian Football Federation, stating, “May the soul of Mohamed El Mokhtar rest in peace.”
Multiple reports indicate that El Mokhtar slipped during training with his club, AS Douanes, and went into a week-long coma before eventually passing away. The tragic news prompted the Mauritanian Football Federation (FFRIM) to cancel the Mauritanian Cup final between Douanes and Nouadhibou, which was scheduled for the same day.
In a statement, the FFRIM expressed their mourning, saying, “The FFRIM mourns the death of national team goalkeeper Mohamed El-Mokhtar, who passed away this Saturday morning in Nouakchott.”
The Mauritanian Football Federation also paid tribute to El Mokhtar, highlighting his profound patriotism, exceptional talent, and unwavering dedication. Their statement read, “Despite his youth, Al-Mokhtar’s remarkable skills propelled him through the ranks, from representing the junior national team to earning a spot on the senior national team. His colleagues remember him for his sincerity, professionalism, and admirable character.”
