Calabar Tenants Flog Landlord

A recent clash erupted between tenants on Waddle Street in the Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State and their landlord, Mr. Obong Ete, after tenants accused him of theft.

According to reports  the tenants reportedly flogged the landlord with horsewhips on Sunday morning, claiming he had been stealing various items, including food, from them.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the incident took place about an hour before the tenants were scheduled to attend church, as reported by Leadership. Some tenants described the 30-year-old landlord as “cursed,” alleging that stealing from tenants and neighbors had become habitual for him.

Local resident Mr. Daniel Akpan stated, “Obong Ete has been doing this for a long time. Many times, youth leaders and vigilante groups have tracked stolen items to his apartment, and he has been publicly shamed for it before.

Yet he refuses to change.” Another tenant, Esther Eyo, suggested that curses laid on the landlord by worshippers from whom he allegedly stole might be driving his uncontrollable behavior.

Stanley Edem, another tenant, recounted previous instances of break-ins allegedly committed by the landlord. Following the beatings, the landlord was handed over to the Mbukpa police station for further investigation.

However, Cross River Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, condemned the actions of the tenants, stating that they should have reported the accused directly to the police. “No one has the right to take the law into their own hands,” she said, urging citizens to follow due process in handling such incidents.
