The Canadian government has announced significant changes to its immigration policies, eliminating the possibility for international students to transition from study permits to permanent residency.

Under the new regulations, international students must return to their home countries once their study permits expire.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that this marks the end of previous policies that allowed non-citizens with study permits to apply for permanent residency.

Additionally, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) program, which expedited study permit processing for eligible students from certain countries, will also be discontinued. Asylum claims linked to these immigration pathways will no longer be accepted.

Speaking on the development, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Marc Miller, emphasized that the policy shift aims to maintain a balanced and orderly immigration system.

In an interview, he stated, “When people come here and decide they want to be students, there are no guarantees of becoming permanent residents.”

The announcement comes amidst protests by international students across Canada, who have demanded an easier process to transition from study permits to permanent residency or extended stay options.

Miller clarified that while students have the right to voice their concerns, study permits are distinct from residency permits and do not ensure long-term stay privileges.

The SDS program, launched in 2018, was initially designed to process study permits within 20 days for students from 14 countries, including China, India, Pakistan, and Vietnam.

It was later expanded to include more nations like Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, and Senegal. However, the program will now be phased out as part of Canada’s updated immigration strategy.

This policy change reflects Canada’s efforts to address immigration challenges and streamline its procedures, despite backlash from international students and stakeholders.
