Cancer Care Expansion in Nigeria Set to Accelerate Through IAEA Partnership – Dr Alausa

Dr Tunji Morufu Alausa, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, has announced a major initiative to enhance cancer care and treatment in Nigeria.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the development follows a key meeting with Mr Rafael Manuel Rossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday.

The discussions centered on a new partnership aimed at expanding cancer care across Nigeria.

Speaking shortly after the meeting, Dr Alausa said, “Our meeting focused on a collaborative effort with the IAEA’s ‘Rays of Hope’ Fund and our NICRAT to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment for cancer care in all 36 states and 774 local government areas.”

He added that the initiative is designed to address the growing demand for advanced cancer treatment facilities and services throughout the country.

Speakign further, Dr Alausa highlighted the importance of securing additional funding from organizations like the OPEC Fund and the Islamic Development Bank.

“These partnerships are vital for achieving our goal of introducing advanced cancer care technologies, including LINACs, PET scans, and cyclotrons,” he explained.

The IAEA has also committed to supporting Nigeria with Gamma cameras for the National Hospital Abuja and assisting in replacing decayed isotopes in six cancer centers equipped with brachytherapy machines.

The agency said it will also provide dosimetry and transluminescent sensors to enhance treatment precision.

Dr. Alausa also announced the upcoming launch of a Nuclear Medicine residency program, scheduled to begin in September 2024 at the National Hospital Abuja and the University College Hospital.

“This program, developed in collaboration with the National Postgraduate Medical College and the West African College of Surgeons, aims to advance Nigeria’s capabilities in nuclear medicine.”

Dr Alausa expressed his gratitude to Mr. Rossi and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the IAEA partnership. “We have settled our outstanding dues, including contributions to various IAEA funds, as a testament to our dedication to strengthening this relationship,” he added.
