Catholic Church, CAN, Back Kukah Over Controversial Christmas Message
The leadership of the Catholic Church of Nigeria and The Christian Association of Nigeria has hurled its weight in support of the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah, following the message he gave on Christmas day about President Muhammadu Buhari’s nepotistic style of governance.
On Monday, the Director of Social Communications, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria in Abuja, Rev. Fr. Mike Umoh, called upon lovers of truth and justice to rise in support of Bishop Kukah over what he labelled an attack on his person and also a scheme to discredit the simple truth in his message.
In the same vein, The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and Abuja, cautioned the Presidency and the Muslim Rights Concern(MURIC) against twirling the sermon conveyed by the Catholic Bishop.
The President of MURIC, Prof. Ishaq Akintola alleged that Bishop Kukah had related Islam to “a violent religion” and “called for a coup”.While The Coalition of Northern Group, also vowed to drag Bishop Kukah to International Court of Justice at The Hague.
As earlier reported by Eko Hot Blog, Kukah had in his Christmas message titled, ‘A nation in search of vindication’, bemoaned the amount of suffering which has affected all citizens in every part of the nation.
He further accused the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), of nepotism, implying that Buhari had intentionally killed the dreams of Nigerians to institutionalize northern supremacy.

He cautioned about the likelihood of Nigeria turning into a failed state, with “endless bloodletting, a collapsing economy, social anomie, domestic and community violence, kidnapping, armed robberies”.
“no way any-non-Northern Muslim President could have done a fraction of what President Buhari has done by his nepotism and gotten away with it. There would have been a military coup a long time ago or we would have been at war” the Bishop said in his message on Christmas day.
In a statement titled,” A call in support of the truth”, the Church said present-day Nigeria doesn’t need anyone sitting on the fence or showing dispassion. That everyone needs to choose what he or she believes in and stand up for it.
Referring to a verse by St. Augustine, the Church encouraged people not to maintain silence but add a voice in support of goodness.
Southern Nigeria and Middle Belt Forum also criticized the outbursts of the Presidency and the Northern Elders Forum over the Christmas sermon of Bishop Kukah.
