EKO HOT BLOG reports that Edinson Cavani has named Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea as Manchester United’s two best players this season.
The Red Devils endured a difficult campaign, going trophy-less for a fifth successive season and finishing sixth in the Premier League with their lowest ever points haul.
However, at 37-years-old, Ronaldo was the team’s highest goalscorer which, along with De Gea’s fine displays in goal, offered a small ray of sunshine in an otherwise miserable campaign for the club.
Cavani, who is leaving Old Trafford after two years, thinks United are ‘inconsistent’ and says only two players perform on a regular basis
Speaking to ManUtd.com, he said: ‘I think that overall, this season, the team has been a little inconsistent throughout the entire campaign
‘I don’t think that we ever managed to find that… how would you put it… that consistency during the season, whether it be in the group as a whole, or also on an individual basis.
‘But I think that the stand-out player for us this season, and someone who did show a little bit more consistency, playing well regularly and always being there for us, has been Cristiano (Ronaldo).
‘After him comes David (De Gea), as he has also been one of the most consistent performers in the squad, so together, they have been the most consistent and best players in the squad from our season this time around.’
Cavani’s exit leaves United with few striker options ahead of next term, with Marcus Rashford out of sorts and Anthony Martial out-of-favour at the club.
Since returning to the Manchester giants last summer, Ronaldo has performed well in terms of goals but, given his age, needs to be supplemented with a second centre-forward.
The Red Devils have been linked with moves for Benfica’s Darwin Nunez and RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku as new manager Erik ten Hag looks to launch his tenure at the club.
However, without no Champions League football on offer, United will struggle to beat their rivals to such signings.
Meanwhile, De Gea has cemented his position as the No.1 goalkeeper at Old Trafford after fighting off Dean Henderson.
