At least three people lost their lives, and 15 others were injured following a late-night shooting at an unsanctioned car show in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The tragic incident occurred around 10:00 pm on Friday, according to local police, who confirmed that no arrests have been made so far.
The shooting took place in a park located about 200 miles (120 kilometers) south of Albuquerque, where approximately 200 people had gathered to watch car races and trick driving.
The event was not officially approved, and authorities believe the presence of firearms among attendees contributed to the deadly violence.
Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story explained that the violence erupted after a confrontation between two groups escalated. “The investigation so far reveals that there was an altercation between two groups of people, and that altercation led to gunfire. Several others were caught in the crossfire and injured,” Story said during a press conference.
Story also mentioned that the groups involved had a history of conflict before Friday’s incident. “There was already bad blood between these groups. Unfortunately, the combination of illegal vehicle activities and the presence of firearms led to this tragic outcome,” he added.
Fire Chief Michael Daniels provided additional details about the victims, stating that those injured ranged in age from 16 to 36 years old. Seven of the wounded were in serious condition and required advanced medical care, prompting their transfer to hospitals in El Paso, Texas.
Authorities recovered between 50 and 60 shell casings from the crime scene, highlighting the intensity of the gunfire. The Las Cruces Police Department is working closely with federal agencies, including the FBI and the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), to investigate the incident and identify those responsible.
Despite ongoing investigations, no suspects have been arrested, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The incident has raised concerns about public safety and the growing problem of illegal gatherings involving dangerous activities and firearms.
Local officials have expressed their condolences to the victims’ families and assured the public that they are committed to bringing those responsible to justice. Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the motives behind the shooting and are reviewing evidence to track down the perpetrators.
The tragic shooting in Las Cruces adds to the growing list of gun-related violence in the United States, sparking renewed discussions on public safety and gun control measures. Authorities are appealing to the community for cooperation and vigilance as they work to prevent similar incidents in the future.
