Gunmen attacked a market in Enugu, destroying properties and burning down a police vehicle.

This online media platform gathered that the chaotic event led to the burning of a police patrol vehicle in the area.

A source in the police confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters, noting, however, that no life was lost in the attack.

It was gathered that the hoodlums numbering over 10 stormed the New Market area as early as 6:00 am, probably to shut down the market but met some policemen on guard, hence unleashing terror on them.

They were reported to have engaged the policemen deployed to the market in a gun duel and eventually succeeded in setting ablaze their patrol vehicle.

Traders who arrived at the market early in the morning told reporters that the shooting forced many of them already at the market to flee for their safety, leaving their goods behind.

“I saw a group of boys around 6 am this morning shouting on traders coming to market to go home. They were shouting; don’t you know there’s sit-at-home? Why are you disobeying it?

“Shortly, I saw a police patrol vehicle coming and immediately, they engaged them in shootout. I left my goods ran to safety. After the shooting stopped, I came out and saw they had set ablaze the police patrol vehicle in front of the Colliery hospital,” said one of the eyewitnesses, who identified himself as Mike Ezeh.

The police command is yet to issue an official statement on the attack on its operational vehicle or the incident in general.

Recall that residents of Enugu State shunned the five-day sit-at-home, Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed disciple of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, declared in the South East region.
