EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a recent development, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reportedly instructed commercial banks across the country to dispense old naira notes in line with the ruling of the Supreme Court.
The directive was confirmed by the former CBN governor and current Anambra State Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, in a Facebook post on Monday.
Soludo urged the residents of Anambra State to transact with the old naira notes and report any banks that refuse to accept them. The governor also revealed that there is no limit to the number of times an individual or company can make deposits with the old notes, and tellers at commercial banks are to generate codes for deposits.
According to Soludo, the directive was given by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, at a Bankers’ Committee meeting held on Sunday, 12th March 2023. The Governor personally confirmed this to Soludo during a phone conversation on Sunday night.
The old naira notes that are to be dispensed by commercial banks include the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes. The Anambra State Government has advised residents to freely accept and transact their businesses with both the old and new currency notes.
Furthermore, Soludo warned that any bank that refuses to accept deposits of the old notes will be reported to the CBN, and the defaulting branch will be immediately shut down by the Anambra State Government.
This development has caused some concern among Nigerians, who are questioning the rationale behind the directive to dispense old notes. However, the CBN is yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
