EKO HOT BLOG reports on former Chelsea player, Joe Cole’s criticism of four players on the team following their 1-1 draw with West Ham United in a Premier League match on Saturday.
Joe Cole, who was commentating on the game for BT Sport, blamed Marc Cucurella, Mykhailo Mudryk, Reece James, and Thiago Silva for the goal West Ham scored. He labeled their defending as “bad.”
According to Cole, there was too much space for West Ham’s Coufal when he delivered the ball and James and Silva were not paying attention when the cross came in, allowing Emerson Palmieri to scuff it in for the goal.
“It shows you when you are in the ascendancy, you have got to score goals and West Ham got back into it,” Cole said on BT Sport at half-time.
Cole also criticized Cucurella for not retreating into space to deal with Bowen. He emphasized the importance of details in football and how it can result in a 1-1 draw.
“Cucurella has got to say to Mudryk, “You get there” and if he can’t get there, Cucurella has to get there. If he isn’t there, he has to retreat into space and deal with Bowen.
“And as the cross comes in, Reece James just takes his eye off the ball and Emerson is at the far post. It is those details in football, and then it’s 1-1.”
Joao Felix scored for Chelsea in the match, which was held at the London Stadium. Carlo Ancelotti’s side remains in the Premier League standings, though their future is uncertain as they sit eight points behind their arch-rivals, Barcelona.
“It’s a good goal from West Ham but bad defending [from Chelsea players]. First of all, as Coufal just delivers it, that is too much space.
“But then at the far post, Reece James and Thiago Silva just switch off and Emerson comes in and scuffs it in.”
