EKO HOT BLOG reports that Chelsea are on the verge of reaching an agreement with RB Salzburg sporting director, Christoph Freund.
Blues co-owner Todd Boehly is intent on appointing a transfer chief to work alongside new manager Graham Potter and Freund’s track record includes names such as Erling Haaland and Sadio Mane.
Freund has been with Salzburg since 2006, taking up a variety of roles before succeeding former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick as sporting director for the 2015/16 season. During his stint, the Austrian side signed Haaland from Molde in 2019 and Mane from Metz in 2012.
The likes of Naby Keita and Dayot Upamecano have also passed through Salzburg en route to Liverpool and Bayern Munich respectively. Boehly recently discussed the importance of putting the right people in the right places as part of his plan to propel Chelsea towards the top of the Premier League.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Blues are closing in on a personal terms agreement with the 45-year-old and talks are on with Salzburg to try and get the deal concluded ‘soon’.
Chelsea are also rumoured to have been keeping tabs on the situation of Paris Saint-Germain transfer chief Luis Campos.
Reports indicated that a lucrative wage proposal had been put on the table but the Portuguese, who only took up his new role earlier this year, showed no sign of budging.
Boehly headed up Chelsea’s transfer negotiations during the summer, which saw them break the all-time record for amount spent in a single window. Raheem Sterling, Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella bumped up a hefty final bill that totalled more than £250million.
“It’s been brilliant, the beauty of football, the beauty of life – you never know what’s around the corner,” said Potter after his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
“Things happened incredibly quickly, we had some very intense conversations with the owners and quickly I realised they were very intelligent people.
“It’s really exciting, the project here is really exciting. The ideas [they had] about taking the club forward. It felt really positive.
I’m not going to lie, it’s been a whirlwind in terms of getting to know people, leaving Brighton, getting to know the players, getting to know them, but it’s been really, really positive.”
