China Is Ready To Work With Trump – Xi Says After Meeting With Biden

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed a commitment to collaborating with incoming U.S. President Donald Trump following his final meeting with outgoing leader Joe Biden.

The two leaders convened on Saturday at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru, where they reflected on the “ups and downs” of U.S.-China relations during Biden’s tenure. Despite occasional tensions, both highlighted progress on issues such as trade and Taiwan.

Analysts predict heightened volatility in U.S.-China relations once Trump assumes office in two months, fueled by his campaign pledge to impose 60% tariffs on Chinese imports and his appointments of outspoken China critics to key foreign policy and defense roles.

During his first term, Trump labeled China a “strategic competitor” and exacerbated tensions by calling COVID-19 the “Chinese virus.”

At the Lima meeting, Xi reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to a stable relationship with Washington. “China is ready to work with the new U.S. administration to maintain communication, expand cooperation, and manage differences,” he stated.

Biden emphasized that while strategic competition between the two nations was inevitable, it must not spiral into conflict. “Our two countries cannot let this competition veer into war. Over the last four years, we’ve proven that such a relationship is manageable,” he remarked.

Biden’s presidency saw several flashpoints in U.S.-China relations, including the controversy over a Chinese spy balloon and military escalations around Taiwan, sparked by a high-profile U.S. official’s visit.

Despite such challenges, Biden’s administration pursued a policy of “responsible management” of the rivalry, emphasizing dialogue while continuing measures like Trump-era tariffs on Chinese goods, including electric vehicles and solar panels.

His administration also bolstered defense alliances across Asia to counter China’s assertiveness, reaffirming U.S. support for Taiwan’s self-defense.

Xi’s concerns likely center on the unpredictability of Trump’s policy approach, analysts suggest. “China is prepared to engage early with the Trump administration to negotiate potential deals,” said Bonnie Glaser, managing director of the German Marshall Fund’s Indo-Pacific Program.

“However, they are equally ready to retaliate if higher tariffs are imposed.” She added that Beijing might be worried about a lack of reliable backchannels to influence Trump’s decisions.

Reflecting on his interactions with Xi, Biden acknowledged their disagreements but noted the frank and candid nature of their discussions.

Over the past four years, the two leaders held three in-person meetings, including a pivotal summit in San Francisco where they reached agreements on climate change and narcotics control.

Despite these efforts, Biden’s administration maintained a hardline stance in several areas, underscoring the enduring complexity of U.S.-China relations.
