The move comes amidst rising tensions in the South China Sea. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., alongside Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, met with U.S.
President Joe Biden in Washington last week, jointly expressing concerns over China’s actions in the region.
According to the Philippine foreign ministry, this trilateral alliance aims to foster peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, refuting any notions of aggression.
The ministry reiterated that China’s activities in the South China Sea, including its expansive maritime claims and aggressive behavior, are destabilizing the region.
Responding to China’s opposition to the trilateral meeting, the Philippine foreign ministry stated, “The source of tension in our region is well known to all.
China should reflect upon its own actions in the South China Sea.” Meanwhile, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning criticized the formation of exclusive circles in the region and accused the Japan and U.S. of perpetuating a Cold War mentality.
Manila dismissed these accusations, asserting that references to the Cold War sensationalize the situation and misrepresent the peaceful intentions of trilateral cooperation.
The Chinese embassy in Manila has yet to comment on these developments.
Tensions between Manila and Beijing have escalated over the past year due to maritime disputes in the South China Sea.
China’s extensive territorial claims overlap with those of the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
